Effort-Optimism

One of the concepts I loved and identified with most was effort-optimism, the belief that hard work will pay off.  I live my life by this concept and instill this value in my children.  Nothing has been easy for me in life or handed to me and I have worked really hard to provide for myself and my children.  I don’t come from a family of money or of any significant social status and grew up middle class.  My reward, or payoff so to speak, is seeing that my kids take nothing for granted, do not expect to get everything they get and even try to pay for most things with their own money they earned or got for their birthday.  They are surrounded by classmates who have iPads or the latest cell phones, drive fancy cars or get money from their parents whenever they want something.  My kids have never asked for these things, and when they do want something we put a plan into action on how to achieve that goal.

  1. I love this one. Hard work does pay off. I believe everyone should feel this way with every accomplishment and goal met in their life. My mom has always instilled this in her children and in my future children I will do the same. Growing up it is the best way to let your children know that nothing comes easy and that everything that we have, food, home, clothing, and luxuries are from hard work. My nieces come from a military background and had recently moved, when they got to their new schools some of the kids drove nicer cars than some parents. So I know exactly what you mean when you say your kids go to school with kids who have luxury items.

  2. Hello Missy,
I love this concept, it is something that I also find is very important and is a concept that I choose to live by. I think that this concept is what is lacking in our society today. We as Americans are very spoiled, we feel that things should be given to us and not earned. People on welfare feel that the government should give them money, for what? Having more children than they could handle? People move into this Country because they don’t have to take responsibility for themselves, they can get money, education and healthcare free because of their ethnicity. The reason that our financial system failed is because people were borrowing more than they could afford, taking more than they should and living beyond their means. If more people lived by the effort- optimism concept then our Nation would not be where it is today.
